Cecilia M.

Hilo, HI
Family Nurse Practitioner & University Professor

I became a nurse to help people live better, healthier lives. I didn't have a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse, but decided on nursing as a major in college (over teacher education). Choosing nursing proved to be one of the best decisions in my life!
I have BS, MSN, and PhD degrees and have worked as: a staff nurse on medical and cardiac floors, a Visiting Nurse doing home visits, an emergency care nurse in a major hospital, and as a nurse practitioner at a neighborhood health clinic, an HMO, and a private doctor's office. For the past 30 years, I have taught various levels of nurses, from nurse's aides to graduate nurses. In the process of being a nurse, I also became a teacher, ultimately capturing both of the professions I was deliberating on over 30 years ago.

I began practice in Hawaii and practiced in Connecticut and Nova Scotia, Canada with an RN license obtained through reciprocity, without retaking the licensing exam. It is comforting to know that nursing is nursing wherever you go, with minor procedural differences. Nurses help people to live better, healthier lives, no matter where in the world they live.
I love nursing!
