Leslie K.

Chewelah, WA
Nurse Educator

Though I had nursed in every area with the exception of mental health, I never really had a passion for any particular field until I began teaching CNA courses at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Here I feel I’ve truly found my calling. To be teaching the very first step so that others, including high school students, can begin a nursing career gives me a real sense of accomplishment and pride. My belief is that our educational system has to give more opportunities to vocational classes so students can succeed in something other than academics.

As past president of the Washington Health Occupation Educators Association and current president for the Trade and Industry Association for High School Educators, I support vocational instructors and try to bring a stronger and clearer voice to the educational system. One need only look at the success of my high school students who have met certification requirements and gained employment in our rural area to realize the importance of nursing vocation classes in high schools. There is no stopping anyone who pursues the health occupations field. I have never been without a job and do not foresee any lack of employment in my future.
